By John Jahn - It’s fascinating to follow a cultural staple such as a particular sport as it winds its way from place to place throughout history. In the present context, for example, we have the sport of polo; not the water-borne version but the horseback kind. Mention “polo” to someone, and dapper Englishmen on sturdy steeds—galloping along the grassy British countryside striking balls with long mallets—might immediately be conjured. HARTLAND -- It’s often said that hitting a baseball is the hardest thing is sports. But Ryan Braun or Jonathan Lucroy don’t have to square up a pitch with a thousand-pound creature between their legs.  "Most people that haven’t watched it," Milwaukee Polo Club member Thomas Esser said. "Really just can’t comprehend that you can be going that fast on a horse and then hitting a ball."  The Milwaukee Polo Club is trying to bridge that comprehension gap by making the sport accessible to all levels. The Milwaukee Polo Club has been in operation for almost 54 years. In that span, the organization has gone from playing in total anonymity to drawing good crowds at its Town of Merton fields located on Highway VV between North Lake and Merton.

Jim Huber, who lives in the Town of Merton on a beautiful horse farm just west of Highway 83 on Highway K, is the President of the Milwaukee Polo Club and the mover and shaker of the organization. The local club wouldn't be as successful as it is today without his lifelong dedication.
